The spirits didnât appear at Lagniappe Books that morning, but the detectives did.
âYouâre very comfortable with that box cutter.â
I looked up from the stack of boxes I was opening to see Christine and Rob standing inside the shop. âYes, Christine, I have a degree in advance box cutting. Are you here for the latest bestseller?â
âDid the butler do it?â Rob picked up a book and paged through it. âAnd is there a pair of bumbling detectives?â
âHe means in the novel.â Christine took the book out of Robâs hands and put in back in the box.
âOf course he did.â I smiled, but this banter was just prolonging the real reason they were here. âWhat can I do for yâall?â
âWe have a few questions,â Christine said. âYour cousin gave us the private investigatorâs reports his sister had. Did you know anything about it?â
âHe told me about it after Scarlett died. I didnât know until then she was searching for my brother,â I said. âDid you talk to the PI? Is he still tracking Joey?â
âHe lost the trail in Huntley,â Rob said. âHave you heard from him?â
âNot since I gave you the postcard last week. Do you think heâs in town?â
âWhy do you ask?â Christine leaned up against the bookshelf featuring mysteries.
âI assume he and Scarlett didnât get along, so wouldnât he be a suspect?â I asked.
âWeâre tracking down all leads.â Rob picked up the new book again and took out his wallet. âSissy said she wanted this book, so Iâll surprise her with it.â
I accepted his credit card and rang up the sale, trying to ignore Christineâs stare. Did she know about Scarlett wanting the tomb key for a windfall her father hid in there?
Yes, she did.
âSo you didnât find anything in your family mausoleum before you went with your aunt and cousin?â Christine said. âYes, Jasper told us about the money. Did you and Scarlett argue over it?â
âNo, to all your questions.â I handed Robâs credit card and receipt to him and walked to the front door, hoping theyâd take the hint to go. Not that I had anything to hide, but I didnât feel like talking to them anymore. I had too much work to do before I returned to the hotel in the afternoon.
âYouâre positive? I mean, the money technically is your inheritance. Itâs from blackmailing your adopted parents.â Christine came over to me and stood a little too close.
Arching my neck, I glared up at her. âI donât have any of the money and I donât want it. Thereâs no point in dwelling on that part of my past.â
Christine studied my face and then put her hand on the doorknob. âIf you think of anything, call us. And of course, if you hear from your brotherâ¦â
âIâll call you,â I said. âAnd youâll let me know anything thatâ¦â
âThat applies to you.â Rob finished my sentence. âStay safe, Sammy.â
I nodded to both of the detectives and shut the door behind them. I would try to stay safe, but I wouldnât stay away from Hotel Jeanne.
